Pitlochry, Scotland – Ruthven Barracks

Ruthven Barracks is an old ruin a few miles outside of Pitlochry. This imposing structure was built by the Jacobites in 1719. It was used to house soldiers stationed there to defend against the British army. The barracks were used until 1746 when the Jacobites destroyed them following their defeat at the Battle of Culloden.

The Jacobites weren’t the first to build on this site. The barracks were built over the ruins of an old castle. There had actually been two castles there. The first was built in 1229. It was demolished in 1451 and a new castle was built over it. The new castle was completed in 1459 and occupied until 1689 when it was severely damaged in a Jacobite uprising. Those Jacobites didn’t like being ruled by the Brits!!

We found it quite amazing that there had been some type of building on this site for almost 1,000 years.

Until next time.

  1. Fascinating. I guess the reason that there has been some sort of building at that site for so many years is related to its location. It appears that it is on a promontory with good views from all sides.
