Scotland – The Unusual

We have seen quite a few interesting and unusual sites in Edinburgh and elsewhere in Scotland.

What else would you expect to see on a street named Cowgate??? Edinburgh.

What the heck??? What do you think this looks like? I thought it looked like a coiled snake. Apparently the locals of Edinburgh weren’t so kind. They thought it looked like the poop emoji. It’s supposed to be a ribbon. This is the new W Hotel that opened about 6 months ago.

Pretty little wildflowers.

This one is a little hard to explain. It’s a wood carving attached to a hand rail. I think it looks like a caterpillar.

Colored leaves.

Old Edinburgh is built on top of an underground city. These rooms, or vaults, were originally built to house merchant’s goods. This picture shows the layout of these vaults. During some pretty rough times people actually lived in these. They were dark, damp, and had no airflow or plumbing. It must have been pretty awful but living outside of the city had its own set of dangers.

There were two of these trees at our hotel in Pitlochry. They were about 50 feet tall and the leaves looked like a bunch of hen and chick plants stacked on top of each other. It was the most unusual tree we’ve ever seen. It turns out it’s called a Monkey Puzzle Tree, the national tree of Chile. The picture doesn’t clearly show how unusual this tree is.

This is a picture of water on one of the lochs (lakes). Just an interesting pattern.

Olive bar.

Rent an umbrella. This option was at our hotel in London.

The Heart of Midlothian. This is located on the Royal Mile in Edinburgh. Locals spit on th heart for good luck. You can tell a tourist from a local by whether they walk on or around the heart.

Kings Cross Railway Station in London. This is the train station where you catch the London to Edinburgh train. It’s also where the Harry Potter Station 9 3/4 is located. Several famous movies were filmed at this train station.

And another view of Cowgate. Because we thought this was udderly cute.

Until next time.
