Birds of South Texas – Bentsen Rio Grande State Park

One of our favorite activities while traveling is visiting the local birds. Here is a small sample from south Texas.

The Green Jay is one of Will’s favorites. It wasn’t until recently that this bird could been seen north of the Mexican border. He is quite beautiful and has a most unique, and loud, call.
The Altamira Oriole is another bird seen mostly in Mexico, venturing into only the southern most parts of Texas.
The male Cardinal is often seen in the eastern United States but rarely in the west.
Even though very common, these English Sparrows are always cute.
A Great Egret.
American White Pelicans and Double Crested Cormorants sharing the same resting place.
A fine example of a Black-crowned Night-heron. Notice the red eye.
These beautiful pink birds are Roseate spoonbills. If you could see the bills they really do look like a spoon. The duck is a Green-winged Teal.
I think this is a Orange-crowned Warbler.
Mexican Ducks on a log.
An Altamira Oriole enjoying an orange.
More bees than birds.
A Northern Shoveler looking for a bite to eat.
I think these are Greater Yellowlegs, even though the legs don’t look very yellow in these pictures.
A cute little Ladder-backed Woodpecker.
I think this is a Red-shouldered Hawk. There can be a lot of color variations in hawks so sometimes it is hard to tell.
Another Black-crowned Night Heron.
And finally, a Snowy egret. Notice the beak is black and the feet are yellow. The Great Egret is very similar except that their beak is yellow and their feet are black.

Until next time.
