May, 2019 – Checking the Weather

In the old days, if you wanted to know the weather (forecast), you would just step outside.

A more advanced technique might include reading the forecast in the local newspaper.

Then the weather channel came along, and suddenly you knew everything you’d ever want to know about the weather, or so you thought.

Then http://www.weather.com and http://www.accuweather.com and so many other web based prognosticators arrived.

When I (Will) really want to know, here’s how I check the weather.

First, I look outside. Hmm. There are clouds in the sky. What does that mean?

Next, I check the weekly forecast at http://www.weather.gov.

Then I read the area forecast discussion at http://www.forecast.weather.gov.

After that, I look at weather radar. Oh, my! A stormy day!

I find it useful to check out the cloud cover and possible convection from a satellite ‘s perspective.

Last but not least, I check in with the storm chasers at SevereStudios.com and see where they’re hanging out. If they are close by I go find the nearest storm shelter. If it looks really ominous I get the cat carriers ready for us all to move to that shelter I just found.

Meanwhile everyone else in the RV is relaxing.

That’s all there is to it!

  1. Many of us grew up looking at weather data & forecasts rendered as “front maps” in the newspapers and on TV. Ever notice how those are less common nowadays? There are sensible reasons for that — for one thing, it takes some artistic license to make them, plus the availability of dense digital data makes them less necessary. Despite that, I miss their simplicity. In any case, I think our feline rulers are content to just look out the window and leave the tedious details to the support staff! 🙂
