The best thing about this award is the winning community, Valley View, Alberta, which has a population of less than 2,000 people. The members of this small community had the foresight to build such a wonderful facility. This center opened in February and has several swimming pools, basketball and volleyball courts, as well as a running track and weight machines. Because winter is so long this far north, indoor activities for members of the community are important. This facility was built as a result of various citizens and corporations working together to volunteer and contribute money.
Because exercise is so important to us we are always on the lookout for a good community center. We took these photographs on a quiet day, but we returned the next day to find a busy place. So busy, there was no room for us to swim. We decided to play a few rounds of badminton instead. It was a lot of fun. (Did you know that you have badminton muscles that become sore after a badminton workout?)
This place beats facilities in much larger cities and will serve the current and future citizens, as well as visitors like us for a long time.
