June, 2018 – The Alaskan Border

We finally reached our official entry into Alaska on June 9! This day started in Destruction Bay, YT and ended in Tok, Alaska.

The horizon is covered in snow capped peaks.

Denise is hesitant to leave Canada.

We never experienced thunderstorms in Canada, but this storm greeted us at the Alaska border.

The drive into Tok was quite rough due to frost heaves, potholes, bumps and dips. In fact, most roads in Alaska are bumpy. Because of the harsh winters the paved roads are actually worse than the dirt roads. They get more potholes and frost heaves. Don’t know what a frost heave is? It is where the ground is pushed up due to freezing temperatures making the road wavy and bumpy. Sometimes it feels like a roller coaster ride.

How bumpy? This bumpy:

One of our drawers opened up while driving and the end result was a broken drawer. This happened when we pulled into camp and opened one of our slideouts.

We happily live with the roads because Alaska is a beautiful place.

  1. Wow. I’m so sorry to hear about the roads – and your damage. You had to be careful when we went, but it sounds like they’ve really deteriorated a lot since we were there. Bummer!
