Pitlochry, Scotland – The Black Castle of Moulin Ruins

These castle ruins appear in a field full of sheep just outside the village of Pitlochry. The Land Reform Act of 2003 allows visitors and citizens the “freedom to roam” on most of the land in Scotland. We took advantage of this law and took a walk in this field and visited the castle.

The Black Castle of Moulin was built in about 1326 by Sir John Campbell. The castle was originally on an island surrounded by a lake, or loch as it is known in Scotland. The loch was later drained and is now an open field. In 1512 the castle was torched due to a fear of the plague. The castle fell into ruins and has deteriorated over time to just a few rock walls.

Until next time.
