Holyrood Palace in Old Town Edinburgh is at the base of the Royal Mile, with Edinburgh Castle at the upper end. It is the royal Scottish palace built in the early 1500s. The history of the site goes back much further than that. There was an Abbey next to the palace which dates back to 1128. The abbey has been long abandoned and is now a ruin.
The palace is still used to this day. King Charles III stays here for a week every summer. In addition, the palace is the official residence of the Lord High Commissioner to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland during the annual meeting of the General Assembly. Unfortunately, the General Assembly was meeting when we were in town. The palace was closed to the public so we could only see the palace from outside the fence barrier.

Until next time.
