Underneath Old Town Edinburgh Southbridge lies a series of vaults going down at least 4 stories. These vaults were built in the late 1700s and were originally intended to house businesses as well as store merchants goods.
As it turns out, these vaults were damp and prone to flooding. The business community left after about 30 years. Starting around 1820 the vaults became home to the poorest residents of Edinburgh. It also became home to many engaged in criminal activity. Conditions were so bad that by the 1880s the vaults were completely abandoned. We took a tour of the vaults. Here is what we saw.

Until next time.
