Edinburgh, Scotland – Calton Hill

Calton Hill is a large volcanic hill in the middle of Edinburgh. The top of the hill has an interesting hodgepodge of structures dating from as early as the late 1700s. These structures include three monuments important to the people of Edinburgh , the old City Observatory, and even a modern day coffee shop.

In 1995 this site became a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Since that time Calton Hill has become a place for both locals and tourists to climb and take in the glorious views of both Edinburgh Old Town as well as the New Town.

The National Monument of Scotland is Scotland’s national memorial to the Scottish soldiers and sailors who died fighting in the Napoleonic Wars. It was intended, according to the inscription, to be “A Memorial of the Past and Incentive to the Future Heroism of the Men of Scotland”. The monument was never completed due to lack of funding.
