Ernest F. Hollings ACE Basin National Wildlife Refuge-somewhere in South Carolina

Last spring while visiting South Carolina we took a short hike at the Ernest F. Hollings ACE Basin National Wildlife Refuge. This wildlife refuge is 11,815 acres, and is part of a larger 350,000 acre Ashepoo-Combahee-Edisto (ACE) Basin System. Here’s what we saw. Enjoy.

This family of alligators was lying along one of the old canals. Notice multiple generations of youngsters all cuddled up with each other. Mom, a really big mom, was a few feet away. Who said alligators couldn’t be cute?

An up close picture of mom. I wouldn’t mess with her or any of her children.

Here’s a Great Egret.

Notice the family of wood ducks. This was a little early in the season and the first baby birds we saw last spring.

Glossy ibises.

In the middle of this wilderness was this old antebellum mansion. It’s the Grove House, a former rice plantation manor built in 1828. It is now the offices for the refuge.

Until next time.
