Yellowstone NP – Mammoth Hot Springs

Yellowstone National Park is an amazing and beautiful place. It is also, geologically, one of the most dangerous places on earth.

It is a super volcano with a caldera 30 by 45 miles wide. Because of that there are many interesting and beautiful geologic formations. You have geysers, mud pots, water falls, and beautifully colored pools of water.

There are 5 entrances to Yellowstone National Park. From the northern entrance you drive a few miles and then enter the Mammoth Hot Springs area.

We got up early to visit Mammoth Hot Springs. We did this in part to beat the crowds, which is still an important goal in the shoulder season. If you’re not done by 10 a.m. then it becomes difficult to find a parking spot. We also did this because the lighting is so great and the wildlife is abundant.
This fellow receives a lot of attention. He was out in the ‘town square’ every morning. He was always gone in the afternoon.
Our first view of Mammoth Hot Springs. You can see the strange rock formations as well as the steam coming up from the springs.
This was an interesting formation.
Thermophiles are everywhere in Yellowstone. Thermophiles are living creatures that enjoy the hot and sulphuric waters that we would find unbearable. While the formations are quite beautiful they have, shall we say, an odd odor.
More interesting geology and biology.
Thermophiles are a big topic of research in many branches of science right now.
There are petrified trees in Yellowstone. We think this looks like petrified wood.
This place looks like another world.

Until next time.
