Writing Rock State Historical Site-North Dakota

The Writing Rock State Historic Site is located twelve miles from Grenora, North Dakota (population 224) and is near the Montana border. It is the site of two large granite boulders carved with petroglyphs. The petroglyphs represent various objects, but both prominently feature thunderbirds. The rocks are clearly American Indian by design, but exactly who carved these, or when they were carved is unknown.

This sign greets you when you visit the site.

You must drive down a long dirt road to visit the Writing Rocks. We didn’t meet much traffic on our way to the site.

The rocks are now enclosed in a shelter to protect them from the elements. They are also behind locked iron bars to protect them from people.

The rock below was the largest of the two rocks.

Can you see a thunderbird in this smaller rock? We don’t see it.

Any ideas on the meaning of these carvings?

Until next time.
