Gladstone, Michigan. Squirrels Playing

After the partial solar eclipse, we decided to seek out early morning birds.

We found something different and totally unexpected.

Along with several regular gray squirrels we noticed two white squirrels. We could see their eyes were pink, making them albinos. Seeing two of them together was amazing.
But it got even better. We found a black squirrel who was happy to play chase with these white squirrels. This black squirrel also had a rare condition called melanism, which is the opposite of albinism. Instead of no pigment, it has black pigment.

To give you some idea of how unusual this is, the odds of seeing a melanistic black squirrel is one in 10,000. The odds of seeing a white albino squirrel is one in 100,000. So what are the odds of seeing two albinos and one melanistic squirrel at the same time? As you can see theses squirrels were having fun just playing in the park.

Until next time.
