Chillicothe, Ohio, US – Hopewell Culture National Historical Park

One of our early goals for our trip to the east was to visit Indian mounds, which were prevalent in the eastern part of the U.S.

Ohio has more than 70 Indian mounds dating back to roughly 3000 BCE. The Hopewell mounds, near Chillicothe Ohio, include burial mounds as well as earthwork walls. Standing as high as 12 feet, the walls formed huge geometric shapes as large as one mile wide. There were several of these earthwork walls in the area. Here are maps showing where some of the structures are located.

It is difficult to imagine the vastness of the structures without an aerial view. Thank you Google.

A view of the Hopewell complex.

A closeup of one of the mounds.

Part of one of the earthwork walls. You can see, in part, how big this structure is.

We took a nice hike around the complex. Notice the fall colors.

Until next time.
