The Erie Canal is a landmark famous for transporting goods and people westward across New York. This man made lock and dam system runs 363 miles east to west and was completed in 1825.

No longer a main route for transportation, it is now a tourist destination. You can take a ride along the Canal by boat or by bike. They are currently in the process of completing a hike and bike trail that will run the entire length of the canal.

Here’s an empty lock waiting for water to help transport another boat down the canal.

Water is pumped in.

Almost ready for any boats coming downstream.

Next the door opens. This video has sound so be careful.
Now that the boat is in the lock, the water and boat is lowered to the level of the next lock. The boat traverses to the other end of the lock.

The water is removed from the lock and the boat continues on its way.

Until next time.
