August 1 – 8, 2018 – The Road to Denali National Park

We left Cooper Landing and took several days to get to Denali National Park for our long awaited visit to the Teklanika Campground. Our first stop was at Trapper Creek about 215 miles up the road. We had one day of sunshine and the rest of the stay there was in the rain. We were told that we could get a great view of Mount McKinley/Denali just a few miles from where we were staying.

This is an ideal view of Mount McKinley/Denali as demonstrated by an old sign. Few visitors ever see a clear day like this.

This is the view we saw that day, which lasted about 30 minutes before the clouds began to cover the peak. We were about 60 miles from Mount Denali. We didn’t know it at the time, but this was to be our best view.

Trapper Creek had a few interesting things to see. Wal-Mike’s had a bit of everything.

A drive down a road that abruptly ended, unless you had a boat.

Our next stop along the way was Cantwell. It was about 100 miles from Trapper Creek and 35 miles to the entrance of Denali National Park. We arrived at Cantwell and had a few hours that were rain free. We took a short drive down the Old Denali Highway but had to turn around as the rain arrived. For the next several days it rained and rained and rained.

We made several trips into the park. Notice the wet road.

There were moose to be seen. They weren’t bothered by the rain.

The day was finally here. We were on our way down a dirt road to Teklanika Campground. Towing the RV makes this drive all the more dramatic.

Notice the wet road and the clouds thickening as they promise more rain.

After one night we decided we had had enough of the rain and retreated to Fairbanks. It is known for its drier air. Along the way out we had to pause at this crosswalk.

The wildlife was delightful. Just like the moose, this small herd of caribou was not bothered by the rain.

The rig did not fare well. Fortunately we were able to wash it in Fairbanks.

Here’s to rain free days. Until the next time.
