July 16, 2018 – Exit Glacier

Exit Glacier is located in the Kenai National Park near Seward. This glacier has been receding since the end of the Mini Ice Age in the 1800s. You can see several markers along the roadside and hiking trails that indicate how much it has receded over the last 120 years. As you drive up to the Visitor’s Center it is amazing to see trees and vegetation where just a few years ago there was glacier.

A view of the glacier from a few miles away.

There is a 4 mile trail that one can hike to get a closer view of the glacier. It starts in the rain forest and after a 3,500 foot elevation gain ends up in the ice fields. We hiked most of this trail. It was a beautiful day and the scenery was amazing. We took lots of photos (but not enough drinking water) and couldn’t make up our minds as to which pictures to include. So, we have many pictures in this edition.

At the end of the hike we were exhausted and sore for several days. It was worth it.
