Airplanes may not be as numerous as automobiles in Alaska, but they are common.

Much of Alaska is not accessible by road so many people use small aircraft as a regular mode of transportation. Most of the roads in Alaska are in the southeast part of the state near Anchorage and Fairbanks. You can’t drive to the state capital of Juneau. You must fly or float there. The same can be said for much of the northern and western parts of the state.

Because much of Alaska is so remote, one in seventy Alaskans has their pilots license. Since airplanes are common, that means runways are common as well. There are more than 3 million lakes in Alaska (sorry Minnesota), so many of these landing strips are on water. There are also many small landing strips that are just long grassy fields.
Because of this you can see small planes in many places. In addition to the obvious places you would expect to see airplanes, such as at airports, you will also see them tethered to the ground in people’s back yards.
