July ??, 2018 – Dawson, Yukon Territory

A visit to Chicken, Alaska, beckons one to accept the challenge of driving to Dawson, Yukon Territory via the Top of the World Highway. This highway is one of the two roads leading to the interior of Alaska. It is about 100 miles long and mostly dirt. In many sections it was a one lane road with precipitous drop offs. Part of the reason for this trip was to see if we wanted to take the RV this way when we leave Alaska. We also wanted to take Mom to Canada.

We’ve worked very hard looking for wildlife on this trip. Some days are easier than others. Apparently a large herd of caribou was nearby. This guy was all by himself and wanted a herd to lead. He decided a large brown Ram truck would do nicely. We followed him down the highway for almost a mile.

The pavement varies from washboard to smooth pavement, but we finally spy the border crossing ahead.

The town at the border crossing is Poker Creek. This is a picture of the town. As you can see from the sign it has a population of 3. It is also located at the most northerly point of entry in the United States.

This sign suggests we’re entering the Yukon Territory.

This part of dirt road wasn’t bad. Really.

The view from the top of the world. Dawson City is up ahead.

There is no bridge across the fast moving Yukon River that separates us from Dawson City. However, there is a free ferry. RVs are welcome, but I was glad we left the RV back in Alaska this day.

Dawson City is a lovely town to visit and explore. We stayed overnight at the Aurora Inn.

The next day we returned to guess where.

After we made the trip we decided that we would NOT take our RV over this road back into Canada. So we will now say a fond farewell to Chicken.

  1. When we traveled to Alaska from Georgia towing our 35 foot fifth wheel, one of the things on our “Must do” list was drive the Top of the World Highway. We spent a couple of nights in Dawson City, Yukon before going across the river. We managed to get the last electric site at the Chicken Gold Camp. We put a bumper sticker on the back of our fifth wheel that says “I survived the Top of the World Highway.” Everywhere we went in Alaska after that people would ask us what it was like to make the drive. Just about everyone thought we were crazy! It’s not for everyone but I’m glad we did it. Here’s my post from 2031 https://wanderingdawgs.com/2013/06/30/day-41-on-top-of-the-world/
