June 9, 2018 – Tok, Alaska

Our first overnight stay in Alaska was in Tok.  It is a small town of under 2,000 inhabitants.   Everyone that arrives in Alaska by road will drive through Tok.  From Tok you can take one of the main highways to either Canada, Anchorage, Fairbanks, or of course, the famous town of Chicken.

If there is one thing that you can count on when you get to Tok, it is that your vehicle will be dirty and possibly in need of repair.  There are plenty of car washes as well as a couple of auto and RV repair shops.

While we were in Tok the weather was quite pleasant.  It may even be considered warm.  However, it isn’t always that way.  The record low temperature there is 79 below zero.  As much as we enjoyed the small town feel of Tok, we won’t be moving there any time soon.

This traffic sign at the junction of the highway coming from Chicken lists the two main destinations.

Here’s a friendly reminder that if you move to Tok, you’ll need a thermometer,

and some fire wood, too.  No joke.

The scenic views in Tok abound.

Tok is a lovely community that we visited several times.  It has many nice RV parks, miles of paved bicycle trails, an outdoor heated swimming pool that is free to use, an excellent grocery store, a city-class restaurant, and a free opportunity to wash your truck after getting a fill up at the local gas station.  We will pass through Tok one more time as we are leaving Alaska and we look forward to that visit.

Until next time….
